Brave Books has had cultural moments. We want more of them, more often, and in front of more people than last time. The goal is to make BRAVE relevant again.
Here's the specific challenge. Our brand is sharp and it resonates powerfully with the audience that already knows us. But there is a much larger group of mothers who want exactly what we make, books that build character, faith, and courage in their kids, and who have never heard of us, or who bounced because the first thing they encountered didn't feel like it was talking to them.
We're looking for someone tenacious enough to force their way into the cultural conversation, and tasteful enough that when people show up, they like what they find.
What you'll actually do:
- Get us into the conversation. Podcasts, press, partnerships, creator collaborations, cultural moments, stunts that earn coverage.
- Resonate with new audiences. This is the central strategic mandate of the role. We need to expand our audiences and figure out where they spend their attention, what do they already believe, and what do they need to hear.
- Run genuine market research. Customer interviews, surveys, review mining, social listening, competitive audits. Not to confirm what we already think, but to find out what we've got wrong.
- Own brand voice. How we sound in an email, an ad, a podcast, a product description, a reply to a critic. You'll write and maintain the standard, and you'll hold the whole company to it.
- Own positioning. What we stand for, who we're for, why we're the obvious choice over the alternatives, and what we deliberately don't say.
- Set the organic and social narrative. Not scheduling posts, but deciding what story our channels are telling.
- Guard brand consistency. Books, subscription, ads, packaging, website, events. You'll be the person who notices the piece that's off-brand and says so before it ships.
- Measure brand, not just clicks. Share of voice, sentiment, aided and unaided awareness, branded search volume, earned placements. You'll define how we know things are working and how we report on it.
What we're looking for:
- Tenacious. You'll hear no from partners constantly and keep going. You'll send the eleventh follow-up. Rejection doesn't slow you down.
- Tasteful. You know the difference between attention and the right attention. You can tell when something is compelling versus merely loud, and you'll protect the brand from cheap wins that cost us credibility.
- Strong writer. Brand work is often writing and messaging. You need to be able to do copywriting.
- Genuinely curious about people. You want to know what our customers actually think, not what would be convenient for them to think.
- Comfortable being the dissenting voice. Sometimes the on-brand answer is the harder answer. You'll make that case clearly and be comfortable with small conflict.
- Strategic and hands-on. You'll write the positioning doc, be willing to write pitches, and be willing to get into the weeds and execute.
Required qualifications:
- 4+ years in brand management, brand marketing, communications, or content strategy
- Demonstrated success earning media, podcast, or partnership placements
- Real experience with qualitative and quantitative market research, and turning findings into strategy
- Exceptional writing and editorial judgment across formats and audiences
- Track record developing or stewarding brand voice and positioning
- Ability to influence cross-functionally without formal authority
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience marketing to mothers, parents, or family audiences
- Consumer brand, publishing, media, or CPG background
- Creator and influencer partnership fluency
- Experience expanding a brand into a new audience segment
- Community building or event experience
- Comfort on camera or on a microphone as a brand representative
- Background with faith-based or values-driven brands
Why you'd want this job:
Most brand jobs are about protecting a brand that is already established. This one is about growth while protecting the brand we already have. You'll have a mandate to expand who we reach and decide how we reach them.
